I had taken the boys out red squirrel spotting – a good way of getting them to complete a dog walk. And knock me down with a fluffy tail, we saw one! As ever I have one eye on the photo and was pleased with this.

Tripods are essential. Discuss. Obviously for some things they are, but with a family and a dog they aren’t first on my list of things to carry. It comes some way behind chocolate, drinks, ball, lead, superfluous coats, acorns, etc. Like many things in life, photography is jam packed with bores who seem to suck the life out of a beautiful thing. So I improvise. For this I squeezed the camera between my head and a tree trunk and put it on self timer. Something like f22 and 1/1oth second.
